Before ordination, I worked in law and am a Master of Laws in Canon Law.

I want to contribute positively and constructively, while ensuring that the Church of England remains faithful to its calling, its faith and its Canon Law, and that national decisions translate into positive outcomes for local churches.
I feel strongly that just as secular law should reflect society and its needs, so canon law should reflect our church as it is today.
So I will resist changing either the church’s doctrine of marriage or canon law in a way which would allow same-sex couples to “marry” in church or clergy to enter into civil same-sex marriages.
For pastoral, theological and ecumenical reasons, I do not support a change to the Church’s Canon Law in relation to the seal of the confessional.
If at some point the Church decides on a change, it seems that it will have to alter Canon Law.
My Master’s in Canon Law, and current PhD Law study, also equip me to contribute thoughtfully to Synod’s legislative work.

Almost everything that I do involves the application of statutes, rules, guidance and codes of practice, and those of you who know me will know that I am a somewhat unlikely enthusiast of canon law.
This interest in how the Church regulates itself developed when I became an Area (Rural) Dean in the Diocese of Coventry over ten years ago and led to me studying for a Masters Degree in Canon Law with Cardiff University.
It may be helpful to explain a little more about my interest in canon law as you consider supporting my nomination to serve you on General Synod.
