Firstly safeguarding, we are all well aware of the challenges brought about by abuse whether that be of a sexual nature, racism, bullying or maybe the abuse of power when in a position of leadership or authority.

Although my membership of the Church runs deep in my sense of self, I have nevertheless already witnessed exclusion and bullying, and, indeed, experienced it myself.

I now serve on the working group developing measures to tackle poor conduct & bullying from lay officers.
Drawing on my law enforcement experience, I have a deep-seated concern around matters of safeguarding, bullying and protecting the vulnerable – which is a very live issue for General Synod.
Involvement in MDB has also meant framing codes of practice which are beginning to go some way to deal with the crucial issues around bullying and harassment particularly of clergy.
Alongside my passion for mission and discipleship, I am determined to see General Synod take definitive action to protect clergy and PCC members from harassment and bullying—protections that, alarmingly, are not yet in place.
This is driven by overwork, poor remuneration, lack of job security, unclear expectations, fear of systemic failures, and a lack of protection from bullying.
While much can be done locally, I will campaign for processes that better support parishes facing bullying, poor conduct, & unhealthy power dynamics.
