In 2023 I completed a doctorate in theology and ministry, researching how traditionalist Anglo-Catholic priests understood mission and navigated change in the Church of England.
Proud to have been consecrated by Archbishop Sarah, I also fully hold to the Five Guiding Principles and the ideals of mutual flourishing, valuing the contribution traditionalist Catholics bring to the Church of England and wanting to see that tradition thrive in the life of the Church.
Why do Catholic, liberal and traditionalist parishes so often feel overlooked?
Some traditionalist clergy and laity feel their place increasingly uncertain, particularly amid calls to reconsider arrangements established by the House of Bishops.
The recent claim (Church Times, 14 November 2025) that traditionalist views on holy order create a ‘fertile environment for sexism and abuse’ has caused considerable hurt.
I personally hold a traditionalist understanding of holy orders and want a vibrant future for clergy, ordinands and parishes who share it.
I therefore want to ensure that the 2014 settlement remains in place, while hoping that modest changes could be made to improve the experiences of ordained women and traditionalist catholic and complementarian evangelical clergy within its provisions.
I know that some traditionalist believers will disagree, even on the question of ‘same-sex blessings’, which is a minimal step.
Living and working alongside traditionalist Catholic colleagues during training and in curacy has taught me that we are better when we work together across difference, committed to learning from one another.
