Evangelism: God’s perfect love is something I want to share.

To me, the Church exists by evangelism as a fire exists by burning: the biggest difference a parish church can make is helping people to know Jesus Christ and to see the world through a Christian lens.
I believe the Church of England needs to be more confident in our evangelism, and more varied, without a one-size-fits-all approach: attractive and accessible to as many people as possible!

e 1am passionate that the church gives a global welcome to all outsiders so that barriers are broken down and effective evangelism can take place.
However, when people say ‘Insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results’ in order to justify abandoning the parish system, I find myself thinking that that warning could apply equally to whatever the latest well-intentioned scheme is (who remembers the ‘Decade of Evangelism’ in the 90s?!) For reasons I don’t fully understand, most Save The Parish people seem to be Telegraph or Spectator readers and, while I have been featured in The Telegraph (in a piece called ‘The First Former Satanist to Become A Vicar’ in 2003) and been a guest on the Spectator’s Holy Smoke religion podcast on a couple of occasions, I more regularly read (and write for) The Guardian but, again, that simply demonstrates my desire to engage with everybody and not demonise anybody.
My passion for evangelism and for sharing the love of Jesus in word and deed has always shaped my life.
I am also clear that parish clergy need greater support and encouragement to be able to prioritise evangelism and growth over the ever-increasing demands of governance and maintenance.
If elected, I would want to speak and vote for: encouraging church growth through parish evangelism and mission; growth in lay discipleship including an emphasis on stewardship; sustainable support for parish ministry including simplification of governance and safeguarding and practical help with HR and policies and procedures; good theological formation for clergy and lay ministers; and would pay keen attention to matters of morale, retention and ongoing clergy training.
Revitalisation - National Estates Evangelism Task Group
Our local experience shows that national investment into lay workers – such as youth workers and musicians – could build considerable additional capacity for mission and evangelism in parishes, providing meaningful support for our clergy.

What I would seek to contribute There are a number of areas where I would like to contribute: ● Deepening discipleship and helping people get to know and follow Jesus in their day-to-day lives, rooted in the truth of Scripture. ● Supporting parishes through strengthening and resourcing the local church at the heart of its communities. ● Building unity through listening and learning across our differences and seeking to walk together in Christ. ● Caring for creation through continuing to show prophetic leadership in showing God’s love for all that he has made through courageous care for creation. ● Engaging with young people through listening to, investing in and making space for young people to lead. ● Mission and evangelism, sharing the good news of Jesus with everyone, from a place of genuine relationship and knowing our communities.

The themes that have most shaped my contribution to General Synod have been: Evangelism - Helping people discover the love of God in Jesus Christ.
I was able to train full-time in my 40s, which is no longer normally possible unless you are wealthy enough to pay for it yourself. ➢ We need theology and formation to support better evangelism yet many of our renowned theological colleges are threatened with closure because of lack of investment.
I am committed to helping ensure that the Church of England stands on a sustainable foundation that enables it to continue serving our nation through evangelism, mission, and revitalisation.

National initiatives should repeatedly have to answer a simple question: I want resources directed towards sustainable parish ministry, evangelism and renewal, children and young people, clergy formation and the long-term health of local churches.
Since 2012 I have served St Peter’s, Colchester through significant renewal alongside the ordinary realities of evangelism, pastoral ministry, safeguarding, finance, volunteers, governance and the care of a historic church building.
We must build unity and consensus between the leadership of the Church of England across our parish churches, to rebuild trust and provide a platform for evangelism and outreach. My second passion is evangelism.
For many young people, climate change is their primary concern, so caring for the environment and evangelism go hand-in-hand.
If elected, I will work to ensure that, staying true to the Archbishops’ vision, local churches are properly resourced, that parish ministry remains the primary focus of evangelism, and that any changes to church structures strengthen rather than weaken the parish system.

Mission, Evangelism and Parish Revitalization: As our nation’s Christian identity becomes weaker, I believe that the Church of England continues to have a unique role to play in mission and evangelism – and that we should continue to invest time and treasure in prioritizing this role.
As a former Parish Councillor and later Chair, walking my golden retrievers often brings me into contact with neighbours who might not otherwise cross a church threshold, offering occasional opportunities for quiet, informal evangelism.
FOR THE PARISH I firmly believe in the parish system as the best means of evangelism, relationship, establishing trust, while showing the love of Christ to the whole parish.
I learned how to make things happen in churches aged 16 when my vicar asked me to join the Mission & Evangelism Committee.

My commitment to mission and evangelism has led SJtL to partner ecumenically with other local churches to develop The Pimlico Foundation, an award-winning detached youth trust working with Pimlico’s most vulnerable children, young people, and families.
I’m also tuned in to the next generation of Anglicans - our 3 adult children (23, 25, 26) are all variously serving as church warden, church musicians (choral, organ, bass and brass), small group leading, youth work and evangelism.

Over the years, I have been involved with numerous evangelistic initiatives, including Alpha, youth camps and street evangelism.

Having grown up in Africa and being a missionary child I have grown up with mission to the world and the local community as central to my passion for evangelism.
As I was growing up in Kenya, I knew many people who were passionate about sharing their faith with others and I would like to see evangelism at the forefront of the work of the church and in the work of General Synod.

In my ministry, I have been involved with serving students, running workplace evangelism in central London, including to the civil service in Westminster, church planting in a couple of contexts, and now semi-rural parish ministry on the edge of Hull.
The team I lead is responsible for implementing the diocese’s vision and strategy, raising and supporting lay and ordained vocations, training of our curates and readers, clergy wellbeing and their continued ministerial development, parish vision planning, revitalisation, mission, evangelism, Children, Youth and Families support and training, and the development of new worshipping communities from new services to large church plants.
At the same time, my theological instincts are firmly Reformed: I’m shaped by a strong commitment to the authority of Scripture, the centrality of grace, anda desire for evangelism that is both doctrinally clear and pastorally grounded.
Evangelism is foundational.
Therefore, evangelism, conversion, discipleship and prayer must be front and centre of national strategy.
Frontline Outreach: Prioritising national and diocesan resources for parish level mission, especially supporting local lay leadership and evangelism.
Mission and evangelism: our first priority is to tell of the saving love of God made known in Jesus, and to live that out in the world.
If I was to be elected, I would advocate for more funding for parishes, for evangelism and to keep churches open.
I have a wide range of interests in church and national life, including the significance of the working sphere (following my career in scientific research & a multi-national company), mission & evangelism, media, children & young people, vocations & theological education, prison chaplaincy, inter-faith relationships and spiritual direction.

EVANGELISM AND OUTREACH – I believe the parish provides a vital framework for creativity in evangelism and outreach, while also serving as a community hub.
The structures and leadership should therefore be focused on enabling local parish churches to focus on evangelism to reach the lost; discipleship so that believers grow to be more like Jesus; and the worship of God as Father, Son and Spirit.
This is a Gospel imperative, and our mission and evangelism rely on our finding a way to preach a Gospel that can be heard, and to be a church that people can believe in.
Helping people grow as disciples and encouraging evangelism in every tradition
Evangelism is the essential role of the Church in this multi-cultural and multi-faith society.
Properly ordered worship, God-Centred, emphasising the greatness of God and our total reliance on the Creator will enhance our evangelism, and we must engage with the new thirst for spirituality which is evident in our society.
We need fresh ideas for evangelism, discipleship, and gathered worship – bold, I know, but necessary, I believe.
Outreach and Evangelism – Speaking about our faith and witnessing to others takes courage.
The parish is the best means of evangelism and is at the heart of the Church of England, but currently its sustainability is in question. ‘Expensive’ clergy training is also at risk of being diluted.
I value enormously having been formed in a church tradition that has mission and evangelism at its heart, but I have always ministered in the ‘middle ground’ of the Church of England that has given me a greater breadth of sympathy, an instinct for meeting people where they are, and a theology that is pastoral as well as missional.

What I will work for Flourishing parishes and sustainable ministry Local churches are where worship, evangelism, pastoral care and service take place.
Inclusion in its widest sense is not just right, it’s key to evangelism and growth – if people feel that they are not welcome or respected because of their gender, ethnicity, or sexuality, or if they face barriers when they attend because our buildings or materials are not suited to their needs, or if they feel judged in church, they are unlikely to be able to hear our message of God’s love.
I will argue for properly resourced, locally rooted parish ministry which enables mission & growth, evangelism & discipleship.

A fresh emphasis on evangelism and church planting will assist.
From that age, I have been active in Christian activities: street evangelism during the Edinburgh Festival, church mission to a housing estate in a different part of town, leading the student Christian Union, teaching Sunday School, leading church small groups, and leading the worship band.
